April is one of the busiest and possibly the most agitated time of the year in the sports calendar. This last April was no different. The championships were determined in the first week of the month, while the NBA and NHL playoffs requested shortly after.
Some of the main stories in sports last month extended beyond matters in the field as well. The NFL and the WNBA made their annual drafts in April, and each brought many surprises along the way.
So what sports stories were the greatest in April? Let’s take a look:
10 bigger stories in sports in April
The Penske team pilot collected his first victory of the 2025 season in Talladega Superspeedway in April, surpassing Ryan preece (Who was disqualified after the technical inspection) and Kyle Larson For hair.

But Kirkwood sacrificed a postponement of Palou’s domain at the Long Beach Grand Prix. He defeated Palou for a few seconds in that race, retaining the best pilot of this season to obtain his third victory in his career.

Kirkwood made it seem relatively easy. He won the post and led 46 or 90 laps. He did not deviate from the strategy, since other drivers tried to face different laps to gain points. At his last stop at the race without caution, Kirkwood mixed with the track in front of Palou and kept him offending Palou’s search for three consecutive victories to open the season.
“Reaxly did not have that definitive speed that car 27 [of Kirkwood] He had, “said Palou.” They did an incredible job during the weekend, the qualification and the race.
“I was driving. Every time I had a small chance, I only had a little more rhythm. The penalty we could really make it more interesting for fans, but I am very happy to be here.”
8. Nebraska wins the inaugural tournament of the University Basketball Crown
Fred Hiberg has had an printing season in Nebraska, and added it in April. He took the Cornhuskers to four consecutive victories in the first Oever University Basketball Crown Tournament, with three two -digit victories.
7. Joaquin Niemann wins the fifth Liv Liv Golf Tournament, writing Brooks Koepka for most times of all time
In the first Liv Golf event in Mexico City, Niemann continued his beginning of the season. He triggered 6 below in the final round of the tournament to win by three blows and get his third victory of the year. He also faces Niemann Five Wins in Liv Golf, writing Koepka for most.
6. Paige Bueckers is selected No. 1 in general in the WNBA Draft
UConn’s female basketball had a rather agitated April. After limiting its historic university basketball career at the beginning of the month, Bueckers became the sixth player in the history of the program to be selected as the general selection number 1 in the WNBA Draft, extending the Huskies record for most times. Bueckers was the national player of the year of consensus in the 2020-21 season and recovered its elite form after an ACL tear left it aside for the 2022-23 season. The first first team All-American joined a Wings team that ended with the second record of sausages in the WNBA last season.
5. Alex Ovechkin breaks the goals record of all Wayne Gretzky
A record that many thought would never break that did that in April. Ovechkin scored his 895 career goal in the defeat of the Washington Capital against the New York Islanders on April 6, breaking the goals record of all time established by the “Great Great.” The moment was accompanied by a hole in the game, since Ovechkin’s historical achievement was celebrated.
4. Florida wins the Male NCAA tournament; Uconn wins the woman
Of course, most of the madness of March did not take place in April, but the last four in the male and female tournaments did. In the Women’s Tournament, Bueckers finally surpassed the hump, helping Geno Auremma and Uconn to win their first national championship since 2016 with victories on UCLA and South Carolina in the Round of Semifinals and the National Championship, respectively.
The men’s Four had a little more drama. Florida surpassed the enemy of the SEC Auburn in the national semifinal, while Houston had an exciting return to defeat Duke. In the championship game, it was Florida’s turn to return furious. The gaters recovered from a 12 -point deficit to win, which makes it the third largest return of the second half in the history of the NCAA National Championship. Houston had the opportunity to tie or win the game in the final possession, but Florida’s defense prevented the Cougars from shooting.
Tennessee’s Titans grabbed who their field marshal will be when, as expected, they selected Ward with the general selection number 1 in the NFL 2025 draft. There was a turn when the Cleveland Browns were on the clock with the no. 2 General selection, however. The Jacksonville Jaguars went up from the fifth general selection to no. 2, exchanging a first round of 2026, among other assets, to obtain a bidirectional stars hunter.
2. Shedeur Sanders falls to the fifth round of the NFL draft
Very rarely there is a selection of non -first round that ends up grabbing the world of sport, but Sanders attracted an unprecedented outfit to the last rounds of the NFL 2025 draft. The Browns Angelon Sanders in the fifth round of the draft, but occurred after surprisingly chose Dillon Gabriel in the third round. Sanders was also the sixth quartback outside the board this year, which was a great shock considering that most Draft analysts classified him as the second best player in his position in the class. Many simulated drafts also project Sanders as a first round selection.
