President Trump said Great Britain had agreed to increase market access for thousands of dollars of US exports, including beef, ethanol and other agricultural products under a new commercial agreement, but left many of the details that are resolved later.
The agreement, promised by Mr. Trump as the first of many that will result from his efforts to fly the global commercial system, seemed more a framework than a complete commercial agreement. Both parties agreed to eliminate tariffs on specific products and made general agreements in other areas, but officials of both governments must still be met in the coming months to mark a specific language. That can be a difficult and difficult process, leaving open the possibility that the agreement can still fall apart.
However, the leaders of both nations praised the framework in joint advertisements on Thursday that invoked the deep relationship between their countries. Speaking from the Oval office and with Prime Minister Keir Starmer of Great Britain in Speaker, Trump described him as “great offer for both countries.” Starmer described him as a “fantastic historic day” and invoked one of Mr. Trump’s favorite historical figures by pointing out that it was Winston Churchill’s 80th anniversary announcing victory in Europe in World War II.
The agreement will leave a 10 percent rate established by Trump imposed on Britain and other nations worldwide in early April. But it will support other rates that Mr. Trump imposed on British steel, aluminum and cars. In return, the British will open access to beef, poultry, ethanol, soft drinks, cereals and other products.
The Government of Great Britain said that tariffs on their car exports to the United States would fall from 27.5 percent to 10 percent for a quota or 100,000 British vehicles. He also said that American tariffs on British steel would fall to zero. Mr. Trump’s Secretary of Commerce, Howard Lutnick, said Rolls-Royce engines and the parts of the plane will come without rates, while the United Kingdom will buy $ 10 billion in Boeing aircraft.
Any final agreement can be more important for Great Britain than the United States. Great Britain occupies the number 11 among the largest commercial partners of the United States (it represented 2.9 percent of the total trade in the USA. In the first quarter of the year, while the United States is the largest individual commercial partner in Great Britain. Even so, it must of that commercial relationship is in the services, which is affected by tariffs.
Allhoug Trump officials framed the agreement as a result of aggressive tariffs that Mr. Trump imposed throughout the world, has a leg interest in an agreement in an agreement. Trump discussed the possibility of a commercial agreement with Great Britain in his first mandate, while British officials have looked at an agreement with the United States from Brexit as a way to compensate for reduced trade with Europe.
The two nations have a relatively balanced trade: the United States sent $ 80 billion of machinery, airplanes, natural gas, crude oil and other products to Britain in 2024, while bought $ 68 billion of cars, pharmaceutical products and others. A commercial agreement would provide Mr. Starmer with a very necessary political victory, as well as a claim or its strategy of regularly cultivating a relationship with Trump.
