Cairn Oil & Gas said Friday that it has been associated with Norwegian electromagnetic geoservices (EMG) to acquire an electromagnetic survey (CSEM) of 3D Fuente for its exploration campaign in the deep water block in the east.
CSEM is a geophysical method used to map the resistivity of the subsoil, improving hydrocarbon detection precision. EMGS is the world leader of the marine electromagnetic market that has acquired data for global supermajors, throughout the world. Cairn is one of the first adopters of CSEM 3D survey technology in India, said the signature of the Vedanta Group.
Currently, the EMGS ship, Atlantic Guardian, is acquiring data for the KGDWHP-2017/1 block using the advanced “deep blue” origin system. It will continue to acquire data in the block over the next weeks and it will process the data to provide results of much more precise surveys of the deep water block, he added.
The survey aims to improve the precision of the subsurface model and reduce exploration risks by integrating CSEM data collected with recently processed 3D seismic data.

“The acquired data will admit the definition of locations for exploration, evaluation and subsequent development, ensuring that drilling decisions are based on the most precise and comprehensive subsoil data,” said Sam Algar, director of Exploration of Cairn Oil & Gas.
By taking advantage of EMG’s global experience and the latest advances in CSEM technology, the KGDWHP-2017/1 block is ready for successful exploration and development, unlocking its hydrocarbon potential, he added.
At the beginning of March 2025, CAIRN entered a strategic alliance with a global technology leader to accelerate the delivery of integrated underwater infrastructure for deep water projects in India.
Cairn has more than 4,500 km2 or a block of deep waters on the high seas in the KG basin, the east coast, with water depths ranging from 500 meters to 2,500 meters. The company intends to start drilling in 2026 in an area of 3,600 square km that has four gas discoveries and a large number of perspectives with multi-TCF potential.
