The “curse” has been raised.
Harry Kane can finally celebrate his first race title after Bayern Munich became champion of the Bundesliga with a little help from Friburg on Sunday.
Freiburg was based on second place Bayer Leverkusen 2-2 to leave Bayern an inagestable eight points per distance to the 2024 champion with two rounds of the German League Remaining.
Kane, 31, never won a title in a race of finalists and defeats in the finals with Bayern, Tottenham and England, which led some to talk about a “curse” against a player considered one of the best strikers in the world.
Kane’s arrival as a record signature of Bayern in 2023 was followed by the first season without trophies of the club since 2012.
Kane was ready to celebrate on Saturday when Bayern seemed ready to win 3-2 in Leipzig. But Yussuf Poulen matched with the last kick of the game so that Leipzig draws 3-3 and postponed the Bayern party.
“Next week, Harry!” Teammate Thomas Muller wrote on Instagram.
Hey, he didn’t have to wait so long.
Leverkusen played without conviction in Freiburg, knowing that second place was already assured and that he only had a mathematical possibility of defending his title with Bayern with a much higher goals difference.
Maximilian Eggestein fired the local team before the break and a goal of Piero Emphapie after putting Freiburg firmly in control.
Leverkusen had to wait for the 82nd minute for Florian Wirtz to withdraw one with the first shot of his team in the target. Jonathan Tah matched with the next in the detention time, but made no difference for the new league champion.
“We are the champions!” Kane sang with teammates in a restaurant in Munich, where he and Joshua Kimmich were soaked in beer or champagne while singing “Three Little Birds” by Bob Marley.
It is the 34th German Bayern championship, including the first for the club in 1932. Any other title occurred after the formation of the Bundesliga in 1963.
Bayern will be presented with the trophy after his game at home against Borussia Mönchengladbach next weekend, when Müller will be given what will surely be an emotional farewell after 25 years at the club.
“He goes like a legend,” said Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann, or the 13 titles of Müller’s Bundesliga.
