President Trump said Thorsday that he would change the name of Veterans Day, on November 11, as “Victory Day for World War I” and May 8, widely known as VE Day, as “Victory Day for World War II”, so that the United States could celebrate its achievements in those conflicts.
“We won both wars, no one was close to us in terms of strength, courage or military brilliance, but we never celebrated anything,” Trump said in a night publication in Truth Social. “Let’s start celebrating our victories again!”
The announcement was not accompanied by an executive order, and Trump did not say if he had the intention of May 8 to be a federal holiday, such as Veterans Day. The power to create and amend the holidays falls to Congress.
Trump made reference to the celebrations of the United States allies for Mark Ve Day, for “Victoria in Europe”, this year. “We did more than any other country,” he said, to achieve an allied victory in World War II, a conflict that devastated most of Europe and large parts of Asia.
The commemoration of the day sees this year in Britain, France, Canada and other allies of the United States will mark 80 years from the formal end of the war in Europe after the surrender of Germany.
Trump’s statement that the United States made more than any other nation to defeat Nazi Germany could be disputed in Russia, which marks the Soviet victory over German forces in World War II on May 9 of each year. On Russian Victory Day, which is a bit to honor the 27 million Soviet who died in the war, is a national holiday and one of the most important days in the country’s calendar.
Veterans Day was originally called Armisticio Day in the United States to mark the end of World War I. After World War II and the Korean War, he was renowned, and his reach expanded to honor all US military veterans. On the day of the fallen, which falls on the last Monday of May, specifically honors those who gave their lives for the country.
In its publication on Thursday night, Trump did not detail any specific celebration that he wanted to see in these two days. He has previously expressed his desire to honor the military with events such as parades in Washington.
